Book reviews RV Traveling Tales: Women's Journeys on the Open Road Heartland Reviews- scientifically-based
book reviews from the heart. From
the Heartstrings Newsletter: If
you want to know what full-time RVing is like for women, this is the book to
read. Fifty-two women, some happily married, some divorced, some widowed, some
single by choice, and one precocious fourteen-year-old home-schooled teenager
who writes like she’s 40, describe in short essays what life on the open road
is like. This book is invaluable for women considering such a life style.
Although it addresses some of the mechanical and physical driving issues, its
real strength is in the sense of community and deeply spiritual connectivity
these women have with one another and other RVers. This is an essential read for
its intended audience. We rated it four hearts. The Independent Publisher - travel/women's booksFifty-two women answer the question: What is it like to be a female nomad on the open road, leaving family, community, and possessions to head into the unknown in an RV?This anthology features the writings of women of varied backgrounds, many living full-time in their RVs, ranging in age from 14-85. They take a humorous look at situations unique to the RVing lifestyle: living in a small box on wheels, maneuvering a 38-foot RV, or surviving bears and other calamities. On the road and away from the support of family and friends, they also cope with life's issues-breast cancer, divorce, loss of a child. MyShelf.com - review 1Let's hear it for Thelma and Louise! Carolyn Howard-JohnsonSummer is coming and some of us-particularly those old enough to remember when wheels were used for long distance travel-are getting a case of wanderlust. RV Traveling Tales will not cure that. In fact, it will exacerbate it. It may also give you some new ideas for satiating the desire. Traveling in retirement, traveling with a husband, and traveling in Europe aren't the only ways to "go." This collection of essays, edited by Jaimie Hall and Alice Zyetz, will appeal to anyone who knows-deep down-that women are sisters and should help one another to a more fulfilling life. I liked "City Girl Takes a Hike" by Cathi Tessler. It convinced me that traveling in an RV is not necessarily for someone else, someone less citified, someone less prissy. After all, who wouldn't like the change from "waking up to the incessant ringing of the alarm at 4:45" to "waking up to…birdsong." Many of these essays have been printed with permission from publications with exotic names like Steeles on Wheels, Rainbow Chasers, and RVing Alaska and Canada. The foreword is by Steve Zikman, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Traveler's Soul. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Americans will be staying closer to home this year than in the past. That may mean more RV travel. That may mean all those Americans will be reading RV Traveling Tales. Let's hear it for Thelma and Louise! MyShelf.com - review 2Women can survive traveling in an RV! Jen OliverForeword by Steve Zikman, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Traveler's Soul Any fan of the Chicken Soup series and style will enjoy this collection of women's RV traveling stories. These stories provide emotions from excitement to sadness. There are stories from 52 women, including a teenager, from different backgrounds who have the love of traveling by RV in common. Anyone new to RVing would enjoy reading this collection of stories. The editors provided a glossary for those readers, such as this reader, who do not know all of the RV terms, such as fifth wheel. The editors have shown through these stories that women can survive by traveling in a RV and that there can actually be enjoyment with their mates in confined spaces! The editors also show that people who enjoy traveling by RV have similar but different situations and show how women can overcome difficulties with patience and experience. Women who have just started traveling by RV or an experienced veteran would enjoy this collection of delightful stories.
